First Team Player Biographies
Mike Williams- St. Raphael
Although foot surgery and the subsequent rehabilitation might have contributed to the dip in his numbers
(16.2 points, 9.7 rebounds) from his All-State campaign last season, Williams still proved to be the most
dominant player in the state when the playoffs rolled around. He carried St. Raphael on his back down
the stretch in the state title game, tallying 30 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists in the Saints' 84-83 win
over Hope that capped an astounding career. Williams will play for the University of Vermont next year.
Moses Sonko- Classical
This senior center was a workhorse in the paint. The Purple could rely on Sonko to put up 20 points and
pull down 10 rebounds on nearly every night. He led Classical to the Division I-AA title and notched 22
points and 13 rebounds in the Purple's 60-48 quarterfinal victory over Woonsocket. He then scored 27
against Hope in the semis, and was selected to the All-Tournament Team in the State Tournament.
Sonko's quickness and athleticism made him tough to defend.
Sopheeng Toun- Cranston East
Cranston East coach Rick Harris says Toun is the best all-around player he has ever coached. Toun lived
up to Harris's praise in the playoffs, where he put on a show, scoring 35-points and dishing out 12 assists in
an 83-77 Thunderbolt win over Rogers in the semifinals of the State Tournament. In the state title game, he
logged 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists to lead Cranston East past Westerly. Toun averaged 18 points
and 4.2 rebounds during the regular season and dished out 110 assists and made 68 steals. He hit 49.3
percent of his shots from 3-point range, was an 85-percent free throw shooter and scored
in double figures in every game this season.
Brian Ravenelle- Westerly
Ravenelle led Division I-A in scoring this year, averaging 21.4 points. He added 7.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists
and 1.8 steals per game in leading Westerly to the state title game, where he was injured in the first half. He
was selected to the State All-Tournament team, and is also the New London Day (Conn.) Most Outstanding
Basketball Player.
Matt Pezzullo- Ponaganset
Pezzullo averaged 20 points per game en route to leading Ponaganset to the Division II-North championship
for the second year and the Division II State Championship. He was selected to the 2002 All Tournament
Team and was a unanimous first team Division II North selection in 2001 and 2002, and a third team selection
in 2000. Pezzullo averaged 24.7 points per game against Class AA teams over the past two years and
finished his career at Ponaganset as the second all-time leading scorer with 1,355 points. Pezzullo is
currently being recruited by Division II Bryant College. He is also being recruited by Rhode Island College,
Plymouth State and Roger Williams College.
